When I was just 6 years old, I was spending the weekend at a family member's house. My older cousin was into making jewelry, purses, and other items out of the tiniest of beads and intricate designs. At such a young age I was intrigued by the details and beauty each piece had. I was given little plastic beads to play with but there was just something not the same. I wanted more. couple years later, on one of our many family trips to the store my dad happened to see a jewelry making kit with ceramic and glass beads, wire, and other jewelry findings. I was so excited for this kit I started making jewelry with it right away. As I grew older, I started searching online for different instructional videos and learned the art of wire wrapping. I began making and selling pieces to and for my friends and kids at school. There was a bead store right around the corner from my middle school. On Wednesdays we would have minimum day and I was at that store. I was always leaving with bags of beads that I sat for hours digging through. I frequented Craft stores and subscribed to many online jewelry making guides. I was hooked.
When I was in high school a college came for a presentation where they briefly mentioned they had a jewelry program. It was then when I realized I could actually have a future in jewelry. I applied, I got in, and moved to LA. I took many jewelry courses and I absolutely fell even more in love with making little pieces of art. I eventually made my way to Texas where I worked for a large jewelry company to get my foot in the door and then shortly transferred to working in their design and service center. It was there where I got to work on people's jewelry and hear the different stories of just how much their pieces meant to them and the memories behind them. That is where my passion for jewelry was set in stone. I knew then that I wanted to build my own business and better connect to the bigger meaning behind the piece.
Before I married my Husband and became a Lopez, I was a Dominguez.
I wanted a name that represented who I am and the blood that still runs through my veins. I am a Dominguez by blood and still am at heart. I went through name after name and had a hard time thinking of something that represented who I was and what I wanted my business to mean. I always thought of different ways to incorporate my name, but nothing ever stuck.
Then a family friend asked if I ever looked up what my name meant. I had not. The most I knew was that my first name, Jessica Meant God beholds, and I know my middle name is Hope. Both, Beautiful but still didn't click. He in that moment looked up what Dominguez meant.
The name Dominguez derives from the Spanish word Domingo, meaning Sunday or of the Lord. Domingo derives from the Latin word Dominicus meaning belonging to God.
I read this and I knew. I could not do this without my family, but I could not do any of this even more if I did not have God in my life. I decided what better way to Thank the people I love most than to base my business name after the family name but more important Give it all to God.
Dominicus is my reminder that it all belongs to Him.
